Howard Mining Services sells mini-loaders for above and under-ground mining applications.

Background

HMS has been hard at it for 4 years developing a patented and award winning mini-loader for use cleaning around mine and bulk commodity conveyor belts and other hard to access areas safely without interrupting production processes. HMS has developed two machines – an above ground machine and a below ground machine that is explosion proof and underground certified.

Product Benefits

The mini-loader eliminates the disruption and productivity loss incurred when for example a mine or bulk commodity conveyor is taken off line for workers to remove or recover spillages. It eliminates the risk of injury from working underneath conveyors, reduces downtime, and is cost effective.

Progress

With PKF’s assistance, HMS received a grant from the Commonwealth Accelerating Commercialisation program in 2015, on top of various mining innovation awards for design and innovation.

Since 2015, HMS has secured local and export orders for its mini-loaders.  Recognising HMS expertise in design and innovation, in 2016 HMS secured the national distributorship for Hetronics Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific) a Methode Electronics company.  Hetronics specialises in the custom design and manufacture of industrial Radio Remote Control (RRC) systems.  In 2017, HMS also secured a major contract to convert Toro’s manually operated machine fleet for remote control operation with the prospect of an on-going strategic partnership supported by method.  Toro is a USD$6.5Bn manufacturer of turf maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment and water-saving irrigation system supplies for commercial and residential gardens, public parks, golf courses, sports fields, and agricultural fields.  Both partnerships will secure HMS growth into the medium term.

PKF has worked with HMS to secure on-going access to the R&D tax incentive, export grants and in 2017 a regional solutions grant of $350,000 to support development of its mini-loader and enable it to support employment growth and strategic expansion from its base in Newcastle NSW.
