Chemical composition of crop organs (eg. grain, stem, fruit or leaves used as agricultural products) is a very important determinant of produce quality. In fact, not only produce quality, but in many cases yield is determined by a particular component such as oil in seeds, sucrose in sugarcane stalks, cellulose composition of forestry materials, pharmaceutical molecules in leaves etc. making routine, simple and cheap methods for measuring these components instrumentally important for the agriculture industry. Due to the current cost and inefficiencies of measuring these chemical components, most breeding, farming and consumer choice is driven by simple morphology such as tonne per hectare yield measures.
Using in-house custom algorithms Rapid Phenotyping has developed a new, high-throughput platform that can undertake rapid, cost-effective, and accurate spectral analysis on any liquid or solid material including calibrating accurate spectral predictions and making routine compositional analysis of materials.
To date, these techniques have been applied to compositional analysis and online monitoring of agricultural and food products in Australia and overseas, but the possibilities are limitless with known applications across agriculture, medical, mining, water monitoring, food processing and construction.
PKF has been assisting Rapid Phenotyping with R&D and introduced AMPS Agribusiness as a collaborative partner in 2017.
